Windows Vista - General CD/CD-RW/DVD Optical Drive Troubleshooting
Note: Some of the following procedures may require the use of an administrative username and password. Please click Continue or enter the proper username and password when prompted.
- Verify that the CD is seated correctly in the drive tray.
- Verify that the label is facing away from the drive tray.
- Verify that the media has no dirt or scratches.
- Verify that the CD works in another CD/DVD drive or another computer.
- Try another CD in the drive, make sure to try different types (audio, data, DVD, and so forth).
- Verify that the drive can support the disc:
- If the disc is a DVD, make sure that the optical drive is a DVD drive.
- Verify that the DVD is Region 1.
- Verify that there is DVD-playing software loaded on the computer.
- Reseat the drive in the computer chassis (notebooks only) making sure it is fully seated and all cables are connected correctly.
- Try the drive in the other modular drive bay (600 Series notebooks).
- Clean the optical light on the device (notebooks only).
- Remove the CD\CD-RW\DVD drive using Device Manager and then reinstall the drive using a system scan:
- Click Start. In the Start Search dialog box, type: device, and then click Device Manager.
- In Device Manager, click on the Plus (+) sign in front of DVD/CD-ROM Drives, right-click on the drive you wish to remove, and then click Uninstall.
- Right-click DVD/CD-ROM Drives and then click Scan for Hardware Changes.
- Let Windows install the drive it finds and restart.
