Windows Vista - Mouse Button or Wheel Does Not Function

Note: Some of the following procedures may require the use of an account with administrative privileges. Please click Continue, or enter a username and password when prompted.

  1. If available, try a different mouse.

  2. If this is a USB mouse, try a different USB port.

  3. If this is a PS/2 mouse, verify that it is plugged into the correct port.

  4. If the computer has not been logged off, restarted, or shut down since the issue started, restart the computer, and then select the Last Known Good Configuration.
    1. Turn on the computer.
      Note: If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot startup menu, use the arrow keys to select the installation that you need to access, and then press the ENTER key.
    2. After the Gateway BIOS logo appears, repeatedly press the F8 key. The Advanced Boot Options menu opens.
    3. On the Advanced Boot Options menu, use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

  5. If hardware or software was added immediately before the issue started, remove the added hardware or software. Turn off the computer before removing hardware.

    Remove Added Hardware

    Note: Also remove any programs that are associated with the hardware.

    1. Click Start. In the Start Search dialog box, type: device, and then click Device Manager.
    2. In Device Manager, in the list of devices, click the device name. From the Action menu, click Uninstall.
    3. In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.
    4. Shut down Windows and turn off the computer.
    5. Remove the hardware that was added to the computer.

    Remove Added Software

    1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
    2. In Control Panel, click Uninstall a program.
    3. In the Uninstall or change a program window, click the name of the newly added program, and then click Uninstall.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the program.

  6. If it is known when the issue started use System Restore.
    1. Click Start. In the Start Search dialog box, type: system, and then click System Restore.
    2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Choose a different restore point, and then click Next.
    3. In the System Restore dialog box, select a day and time from the list when the computer was working properly, and then click Next.
    4. Close any open programs, and then in the System Restore dialog box, click Finish.
    5. After the computer returns to Windows, in the System Restore dialog box, click OK.
    6. Determine whether the computer is working properly. If necessary, repeat the preceding steps selecting an earlier time and date.
    Note: If no hardware or software has been added and System Restore is not applicable, continue troubleshooting. Test after each step until a resolution is found.

  7. Check Event Viewer for any errors or warning events.

  8. Check all related issues. If an appropriate issue document is located and followed, document the issue number in the appropriate Siebel Service Request within the session comments field.

  9. If the issue occurs in only one program, remove and reinstall that program.
    Note: If the issue occurs with the wheel, verify that the program you are using supports wheel mouse devices.

  10. If the issue started after installing a new device driver, use Driver Rollback to revert to the previous driver.
    1. Make sure that there is a connection to the Internet.

    2. Click Start. In the Start Search dialog box, type: device, and then click Device Manager.
    3. In Device Manager, select the device that Roll Back Driver needs to be used on, and then from the Action menu, click Properties.
      Note: Printer drivers cannot be restored with Device Driver Roll Back and Driver Roll Back only reverts to the previously installed driver.
    4. In the Properties dialog box for the selected device, click the Driver tab, and then click Roll Back Driver.
    5. When prompted to roll back the previous driver, click Yes.
    6. The driver is changed back to the previous driver. The driver name, driver provider, driver date, driver version, and digital signer change to the corresponding driver. In the Properties dialog box for the selected device, click Close.
    7. In the System Settings Change dialog box, click Yes to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

  11. Remove and reinstall the mouse drivers.

  12. Check Device Manager in normal mode. Verify the following:
    • Everything is properly installed and does not contain a red X or yellow exclamation point.
    • There are no device conflicts.
    • There is no hardware listed under Other Devices.

  13. Start the computer in Safe mode.
    • Check Device Manager for duplicate devices.
    • Try to recreate the issue, if applicable. If the computer works fine in Safe mode, the issue may be a program or device driver loading.
