How do I clear the events in the Event Logs?

Note: Each log must be cleared individually.

  1. From the Windows Vista default Start menu, click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, click System and Maintenance.

  3. In the System and Maintenance window, under Administrative Tools, click View event logs.

  4. In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.

  5. The Event Viewer opens.

  6. In the Event Viewer window, click Windows Logs.

  7. Under Windows Logs, click Application, and then from the Action menu, click Clear Log.

  8. In the Event Viewer dialog box, to save the Application log, click Save and Clear. Otherwise, click Clear.

    Note: If the log is saved before clearing it, you are prompted for a saving location. The logs are saved with an *.evtx extension.

  9. Repeat this process for the Security, Setup, System, and Forwarded Events logs.

  10. After clearing all logs in the Event Viewer, from the File menu, click Exit.

  11. In the Administrative Tools dialog box, click the X on the top right corner to close the window.
