eMachines Windows Vista FAQ

eMachines recommends Windows Vista® Home Premium.

Potential issues with Media Center in Windows Vista:

Symptom: When attempting to burn a TV show to DVD, the burn process fails.
Cause: It is possible that the TV show that you are attempting to burn to DVD has been marked for copyright protection by the content provider. The error that is received will indicate this.
Resolution: Media Center will always honor to decision of the content provider about whether or not to protect their content. The content provider can choose to restrict recording or burning any of their content.

Symptom: Media Center is unable to import pictures from a camera or flash memory device.
Cause: Media Center relies on the underlying image acquisition architecture of Windows Vista, so if that is not functioning correctly then Media Center will be unable to import images.
Resolution: Use the steps below.

  • Verify that you are able to import images outside of the Media Center interface.
  • Verify that the Windows Image Acquisition service has been started.

Symptom: Media Center fails to download and update the program guide.
Cause: There are multiple possible causes for this problem, but the most likely cause is that the existing program guide has become populated with invalid data.
Resolution: Use the steps below.

  • Verify that the customer is currently connected to the Internet.
  • Disable and re-enable the guide.
  • Launch Media Center, choose Settings, General, Media Center Setup, and then choose to not use the guide.
  • Restart the computer, re-launch Media Center, run Media Center setup again, and then choose to use the guide again.
  • Reset the EPG database.
    • Rename the following folder: ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Ehome\EPG
    • After renaming this folder, it will be necessary to set up the guide listings again in the TV portion of Media Center setup.
  • Verify the time on the computer is accurate.
    • Check the time and time zone.
    • Check the day, date, month, and year.
  • Re-register the Media Center guide assembly.
    • Because the majority of Media Center is a .NET application, it is not necessary to use REGSVR32 to re-register any DLLs. However, it may become necessary to re-register a .DLL assembly. The command that will be used to accomplish that in this case is:
      \%windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Regasm.exe%windir%\ehome\ehepgdat.dll
  • Check the event log for any errors from source "Media Center Scheduler". Compare the event ID against the list, and then follow the recommended action.

Symptom: File copies to or from a Windows Vista PC while Media Center is recording are slow.
Cause: Windows Vista includes a technology called Scheduled File I/O that Media Center uses to ensure glitch free playback and recording. This technology is used by applications to ensure that any disk I/O from that application receives the appropriate priority. This technology is similar to the networking technology QoS.
Resolution: The main times that SFIO will come into play are when Media Center is either recording or playing back TV shows. For this reason it is recommended that you time large file copies around a time when Media Center is not in use and is not recording a television show.
